What Is a Thermal Conductive Silicone Adhesive?

A thermal conductive silicone adhesive is a one-part RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) compound that bonds heat-generating components to their heat dissipation structures while transferring heat across the interface. Unlike thermal grease, which stays pumpable and must be held in place by mechanical clamps, this adhesive cures to a flexible elastomer that provides both structural bonding and thermal transfer in a single application step. That eliminates the need for screws, clips, or separate adhesives in designs where permanent heat sink attachment is preferred.

Why Buyers Choose a Curing Adhesive Over Grease or Pads

If you are currently using thermal grease or thermal pads, you may be facing recurring issues in production and field performance:

  • Pump-out and migration: Non-curing grease can flow out of the interface under thermal cycling, leaving air gaps that spike junction temperatures over time.

  • Mechanical fastener complexity: Pads and greases both require screws, springs, or clips to maintain contact pressure, adding parts cost and assembly time.

  • Gap thickness inconsistency: Pre-cut pads come in fixed thicknesses that may not match your actual gap, while grease application thickness depends heavily on operator technique.

A curing thermal adhesive addresses all three problems: it stays where you dispense it, bonds the components without fasteners, and fills irregular gaps as it cures.

Key Features

  • One-part RTV cure: No mixing required. Dispense directly from the container and let it cure at room temperature. No oven, no separate catalyst.

  • 1.5 W/mK thermal conductivity: Sufficient for bonding LEDs, small power transistors, sensors, and other components where moderate heat transfer plus structural adhesion is needed.

  • Electrical insulation: With a dielectric strength of 15 kV/mm, the cured adhesive electrically isolates the component from the heat sink, preventing short circuits.

  • Wide temperature range: Remains flexible from -40 to +200 degC, accommodating thermal expansion and contraction without cracking or delamination.

  • Silicone base: Inherently resistant to UV, ozone, and moisture. Suitable for outdoor electronics and harsh-environment applications where organic adhesives degrade.

  • Reworkable before full cure: Adjustments can be made within the first 30 minutes of application. Once fully cured (24 hours at 25 degC), the bond is permanent.

Product Advantages

  • Fewer assembly parts: The adhesive replaces screws, clips, and thermal grease in one step. This simplifies your BOM and reduces assembly time on the production line.

  • No pump-out failure: Because the adhesive cures to a solid elastomer, it cannot migrate or pump out under thermal cycling. This eliminates a common field failure mode associated with non-curing thermal grease.

  • Gap-filling capability: The paste consistency before cure allows it to fill uneven surfaces, burrs, and micro-gaps that rigid pads cannot conform to.

  • Long-term flexibility: The cured silicone elastomer maintains flexibility across the full temperature range, absorbing CTE mismatch stress between bonded materials.

  • RoHS and REACH compliance: Suitable for electronics manufacturers who require documented material compliance for EU and global markets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the adhesive take to fully cure?

Full cure takes 24 hours at 25 degC with 50% relative humidity. Tack-free time is approximately 30 minutes. Cure speed depends on temperature and humidity; higher humidity accelerates curing.

Can I rework a bonded component after full cure?

The cured bond is permanent but can be cut with a sharp blade for rework. Residual adhesive can be removed with silicone solvents. Unlike grease, you cannot simply lift and reseat the component.

Is this adhesive electrically conductive?

No. The cured adhesive is electrically insulating with a dielectric strength of 15 kV/mm. If you need electrical conductivity in addition to thermal conductivity, a different product type is required.

What packaging options are available?

Standard packaging includes 100g tubes, 330ml cartridges, and 1kg pails. Custom packaging can be discussed for volume orders. Please specify your preferred format in your inquiry.

Do you provide TDS and MSDS documents?

Yes. Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) are available. Please request these documents along with your quote so we can provide the correct version for your application and regulatory requirements.
